Basketball Efficiency Training Load Calculator

This calculator turns a basketball practice, workout, or game session into a simple internal training-load value using session duration and perceived exertion. The method is useful when coaches or players want a repeatable record of how demanding a session felt, especially when detailed wearable data are unavailable or inconsistent.

The result is reported in arbitrary units (AU) as minutes multiplied by session RPE. It can be tracked across days to compare session demands, but it does not measure mechanical stress on specific tissues or identify injury risk. A short, very hard session and a longer, moderate session can produce similar totals even though they stress the athlete differently.

1. Enter total session minutes
Use the active session length you want to track. Keep your inclusion rule consistent for warm-up, practice drills, scrimmage, and conditioning.

Session training load (AU) = Session duration (minutes) × Session RPE

Session RPE is entered on a 1–10 scale and acts as the intensity multiplier. The result is an arbitrary-unit workload index, so 600 AU means 600 in this tracking system rather than a physical unit such as joules.

The method assumes one overall RPE represents the session. It does not distinguish jumping, sprinting, contact, skill repetitions, or external load.

What the result means

The AU value is a simple internal-load record for the session. Larger values come from longer duration, higher perceived exertion, or both.

Use trends and comparable sessions rather than treating a single AU cutoff as universally safe or unsafe.

When should session RPE be recorded?

Use a consistent timing rule after the session rather than rating each drill separately. Consistency matters more than trying to create false precision.

Can I add two sessions together?

Yes, if both were calculated with the same method, their AU values can be summed for a daily total. Keep each session logged separately as well so you can see how the total was built.

Is 700 AU automatically too much?

No universal cutoff is built into this calculator. Tolerance depends on the athlete, session type, recent workload, and many factors outside this simple index.

Does this replace wearable workload data?

No. It provides an internal perceived-load measure, while wearables may capture movement, acceleration, or heart-rate information. The measures can complement each other.

Why can different workouts have the same load?

Because the formula uses only duration and RPE. For example, 60 minutes at RPE 8 and 80 minutes at RPE 6 both equal 480 AU, despite different session structures.
