Container Loading Per-Shipment Cost Estimator

The Container Loading Per-Shipment Cost Estimator calculates the average container-loading cost allocated to each shipment sharing a container or load. It combines the selected container-level transportation charge with loading labor, documentation, handling, and other load-level costs, then divides the total by the number of shipments represented.

The result is useful when a logistics team needs a consistent allocation basis for multi-shipment containers, lane costing, customer profitability analysis, or scenario comparisons. It is an average allocation, so it does not account for differences in shipment weight, cube, handling complexity, or commercial pricing unless those differences are already reflected in the inputs. For weighted allocation, use this estimate as a baseline and apply a separate allocation method.

The model allocates total load-level cost equally across all shipments. It does not weight shipments by volume, weight, revenue, stops, or handling effort.

What the result means

The result is the equal-share average of the entered container-level costs across the number of shipments in the load.

Use the same cost scope in every scenario. Excluding a fee in one comparison and including it in another can distort per-shipment comparisons.

Given: freight = $3,100, loading and handling = $460, documentation and fees = $140, other cost = $100, with 19 shipments.

Calculation: Total cost = 3,100 + 460 + 140 + 100 = $3,800. Per-shipment cost = 3,800 / 19 = $200.00. Non-freight share = 700 / 3,800 × 100 = 18.42%.

Result: Average container-loading cost per shipment = $200.00.

Under an equal allocation method, each of the 19 shipments is assigned $200 of the entered container-level cost.

Should product cost be included?

Usually not if you are estimating logistics cost per shipment. Include only the cost categories you intentionally want allocated across the container.

Can I allocate cost by shipment weight instead?

This calculator uses equal allocation by shipment count. For weight-based allocation, divide each shipment’s weight by total load weight and apply that share to the total cost.

What if a shipment occupies much more container space than the others?

Equal allocation may then be too simplistic. A cube-based or weight-based method can better reflect resource usage when shipment sizes vary materially.

Should customs duties be entered as other cost?

Only if they are truly container-level costs you intend to spread across all included shipments. Shipment-specific duties are usually better assigned directly to the relevant shipment.

Why track the non-freight cost share?

It shows how much of the load-level total comes from handling, documentation, and other charges rather than the primary freight amount. This can help identify cost components worth reviewing separately.
