The metric is useful for spotting underfilled loads, evaluating consolidation opportunities, and comparing planned versus actual cube usage. Because volume utilization considers space only, it should not be treated as a complete measure of loading efficiency. A container can reach a weight limit before its cube is full, and irregular shapes, pallets, dunnage, prohibited stacking, or access requirements can leave practical space unavailable even when nominal cubic volume remains.

The calculation is based on nominal cargo cube and usable container cube. It does not model packing geometry or weight limits.

What the result means

The percentage indicates how much of the entered usable container cube is represented by the loaded cargo volume.

Utilization above 100% means the loaded-volume input exceeds the usable-volume baseline. Recheck units or the volume assumptions before using the result operationally.

Given: usable container volume = 76.4 m³ and loaded cargo volume = 61.8 m³.

Calculation: Utilization = 61.8 / 76.4 × 100 = 80.89%. Unused volume = 76.4 − 61.8 = 14.6 m³. Remaining volume = 19.11%.

Result: Container cube utilization = 80.89%.

The cargo represents just over four-fifths of the entered usable cubic capacity, leaving 14.6 m³ of nominal cube unused.

Can utilization exceed 100%?

Mathematically yes, but it usually indicates inconsistent units or a loaded-volume total that is not comparable with the usable-volume value. Review the inputs before interpreting it as a real loading condition.

Does 90% cube utilization mean the container is almost full in practice?

Not necessarily. Cargo shape and placement can create voids, and operational clearances may prevent all nominal volume from being usable.

Should pallet volume be included?

If the cargo is palletized and you are measuring occupied shipping cube, include the dimensions of the loaded pallet unit rather than only the product inside it.

Does this calculation include weight utilization?

No. Cube utilization measures space usage only. Weight utilization requires comparing cargo weight with an applicable payload or weight limit.

How can I use this metric across lanes?

Use a consistent usable-volume basis and cargo-volume method, then compare percentages over time. Differences can point to consolidation, packaging, or load-planning opportunities.
