Height in centimeters is divided by 100 before squaring. Adult screening categories are under 18.5, 18.5–24.9, 25.0–29.9, and 30.0 or higher.

What the result means

BMI summarizes weight relative to height and places the result in an adult screening category.

BMI is not a diagnosis and should be interpreted with other health information.

Given: Weight 70 kg and height 175 cm.

Calculation: Height = 1.75 m. BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75²) = 22.86.

Why does BMI use height squared?

Squaring height provides a practical scaling relationship between body mass and stature for adult screening.

Can muscular people have a high BMI?

Yes. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, so muscular people may be classified higher despite low body fat.

Does the category apply to children?

No. Children and teens use age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles.

Should height be entered in shoes?

No. Use standing height without shoes for a more consistent result.
