It uses the deck's length and width together with board width, board gap, board length, joist spacing, post spacing, and a waste allowance to estimate key quantities before you request supplier pricing.

The output is intended for early planning, not structural design. Deck framing requirements depend on span tables, lumber species and grade, beam layout, load assumptions, footing design, local codes, fasteners, stairs, railings, and attachment details. This calculator therefore focuses on repeatable geometric quantities and leaves engineering decisions to the appropriate plans and code requirements. Assumptions: The deck is treated as a simple rectangle with boards running along the entered length. Post count is a rough perimeter-based planning value and is not a substitute for beam, footing, or structural layout design.

What the result means

The main result is estimated decking linear footage after the selected waste allowance. The breakdown also provides a rounded stock-board count and rough framing quantities.

Stairs, railings, fascia, blocking, beams, hardware, and concrete footings are not included in the main decking quantity and should be estimated from the final design.

Given:

Calculation:
Deck area = 20 × 14 = 280 sq ft
Board rows = ceil(14 × 12 ÷ 5.75) = ceil(29.22) = 30 rows
Base decking = 30 × 20 = 600 linear ft
With waste = 600 × 1.10 = 660 linear ft
Stock boards = ceil(660 ÷ 16) = 42 boards
Joists = ceil(20 × 12 ÷ 16) + 1 = 16
Perimeter posts ≈ ceil(68 ÷ 6) = 12

Result:
About 660 linear feet of decking, or 42 sixteen-foot stock boards.

Interpretation:
This provides a rough decking takeoff for a rectangular layout. The framing counts still need to be checked against the actual beam and footing plan.

Why does the calculator use linear feet for decking?

Deck boards are commonly planned by length after the number of board rows is known. Linear footage makes it easier to translate the layout into stock board lengths.

Does joist spacing determine whether the deck is structurally safe?

No. The entered spacing only estimates quantity. Acceptable joist size and spacing depend on span, lumber species and grade, loads, decking requirements, and applicable codes.

Are stairs and railings included?

No. The model covers the main rectangular deck surface plus rough joist and perimeter-post counts. Stairs, railings, fascia, beams, blocking, hardware, and footings require separate takeoffs.

How should I choose a waste allowance?

Use a percentage that reflects board lengths, layout pattern, defects, and expected offcuts. Complex diagonal patterns or many short cuts can require more waste than a simple straight layout.

Why can the board count be higher than area divided by board area?

The estimator respects board rows, gaps, and whole stock lengths. Rounding to complete rows and complete boards can increase the purchase quantity compared with a purely area-based calculation.
