Assumptions: The model treats waste as a percentage of net rectangular area. It does not account for board direction, stock lengths, diagonal geometry, stair treads, fascia, picture framing, or railing material.

What the result means

The main result is the additional square footage reserved for waste. The total purchase area combines the finished deck area and that allowance.

For boards sold by length, a board-by-board layout can produce a different waste figure than an area-only estimate.

Given:
• Deck: 20 ft × 14 ft
• Waste allowance: 10%
• Package coverage: 20 sq ft

Calculation:
Net area = 20 × 14 = 280 sq ft
Waste area = 280 × 0.10 = 28 sq ft
Total purchase area = 280 + 28 = 308 sq ft
Packages = ceil(308 ÷ 20) = 16

Result:
28 extra sq ft for waste; 308 sq ft total purchase area.

Interpretation:
At 20 sq ft per package, the calculation rounds up to 16 packages. Actual board packaging and cut layout should still be checked before ordering.

What is the difference between waste area and total purchase area?

Waste area is only the extra buffer. Total purchase area is the net deck area plus that buffer.

Should diagonal decking use a larger waste allowance?

Often it can, because angled cuts may create more unusable offcuts. The appropriate percentage depends on the exact pattern, stock lengths, and whether offcuts can be reused.

Does this include framing lumber?

No. The calculator applies waste to the deck surface quantity only. Joists, beams, posts, blocking, fascia, and railings should be estimated separately.

What if my material is sold by linear foot instead of square foot?

Use the total purchase area as a planning reference, but convert it with the actual board width or use a dedicated material takeoff. Linear-foot ordering is sensitive to board width and stock lengths.

Why are packages rounded up?

Partial packages may not be purchasable. The calculator rounds to the next whole unit, but suppliers may have different packaging or return policies.
