It treats “shipping” as electronic delivery rather than physical postage, which is useful for video files, software installers, audio bundles, design packs, and other large downloads.

The result reports monthly delivery and storage cost, total transferred data, and average cost per download. It does not estimate customer support, payment fees, or content hosting features bundled into a flat subscription, so enter only metered costs that genuinely change with file storage or transfer.

1. Measure the delivered package
Enter the compressed file size received by one customer, in megabytes.

Count initial downloads and repeat downloads if both consume metered transfer.

Use the provider charge per gigabyte of outbound data.

  • Egress Rate: outbound transfer price per gigabyte

Assumptions: The calculator uses 1,024 MB per GB and assumes every download transfers the full entered file size. Free transfer allowances and tiered pricing are not applied automatically.

What the result means

Given: A 750 MB product, 1,800 monthly downloads, $0.08 per GB transferred, 25 GB stored, and $0.023 per GB-month.

Calculation: Transfer = 750 × 1,800 ÷ 1,024 = 1,318.36 GB. Transfer cost = 1,318.36 × $0.08 = $105.47. Storage cost = 25 × $0.023 = $0.58.

Result: Estimated monthly digital delivery cost is $106.04, or about $0.0589 per download.

Does streaming use the same calculation?

It can be approximated with average data consumed per stream instead of full file size. Adaptive bitrate and partial viewing can make actual transfer lower or higher.

Should repeat downloads be counted?

Yes, when the provider bills each transfer. Use total download events rather than unique customers.

How do free egress allowances affect the result?

Subtract the allowance from billable transferred gigabytes before applying the rate, or treat the result as a conservative estimate.

Why is storage often much smaller than transfer cost?

A file may be stored once but downloaded many times. Repeated outbound transfer can therefore dominate metered delivery cost.

Is this physical shipping cost?

No. It estimates electronic file delivery and storage. Use a parcel shipping tool for physical products or printed add-ons.
