Door Replacement Material Requirements Estimator

This estimator calculates basic material requirements for a door replacement project from door count and average opening dimensions. It reports the total door opening area, adds a waste allowance for area-based accessory materials, and estimates casing or trim length around three sides of each opening. Doors differ by swing, thickness, jamb width, trim profile, sidelights, thresholds, and hardware, so final ordering still requires item-by-item specifications. Assumptions: All doors use the same average dimensions and casing is estimated on both faces around the two jamb sides and head. Hardware, jamb stock, thresholds, and product-specific packaging are not included.

Given:
Door count = 5
Average width = 36 in
Average height = 80 in
Waste allowance = 7%

Calculation:
Area per door = 36 × 80 ÷ 144 = 20 sq ft
Net opening area = 20 × 5 = 100 sq ft
Area material with waste = 100 × 1.07 = 107 sq ft
Casing = (2 × 80 + 36) ÷ 12 × 2 × 5 = 163.33 linear ft

Result:
107 sq ft of area-based material

Interpretation:
The five openings total 100 sq ft; a 7% allowance raises the area-based planning quantity to 107 sq ft, with about 163.3 linear ft of casing around both faces.

Does the casing estimate include the threshold?

No. It estimates trim around the two vertical sides and top of the opening on both faces. Thresholds or sills should be measured and ordered separately.

Should I use slab size or rough opening size?

Use the dimension that matches the material being estimated. Final door-unit ordering must follow the manufacturer’s sizing requirements, which may differ from rough opening dimensions.

How do sidelights affect the estimate?

Sidelights make the opening wider and add trim and accessory material. Treat those assemblies separately or enter an average width that represents the entire unit only when that matches your takeoff purpose.

Does this calculate hinges, locksets, or fasteners?

No. Hardware count depends on door type, weight, security requirements, and chosen product. Build a separate hardware schedule for final ordering.

Why add a waste allowance to area but not casing length?

The area result includes a direct percentage allowance. Casing is reported as net linear footage so you can apply a stock-length and cut-plan allowance appropriate to the trim profile you are buying.
