Assumptions: The model applies one percentage to the entire measured trim quantity. It does not optimize individual cut lengths or account for supplier-specific stock lengths.

What the result means

Actual project requirements can differ because of site conditions, product specifications, workmanship, local pricing, and supplier packaging.

Given:

Calculation:
Extra trim = 240 × (12 ÷ 100) = 28.8 linear ft
Total purchase quantity = 240 + 28.8 = 268.8 linear ft

Result: 28.8 linear ft of extra trim; 268.8 linear ft total before stock-length rounding.

Interpretation: The allowance reserves nearly 29 extra linear feet for cutting loss and defects. The actual order should still be rounded up to whole boards or bundles.

Is the waste percentage a required industry standard?

No. Waste depends on trim profile, stock length, opening sizes, cut plan, defects, and installer technique. Enter a rate that matches the project rather than treating the default as a rule.

Should I include door slabs in this trim allowance?

No. This version is intended for linear casing or trim material. Door slabs and prehung units are purchased as discrete units and should be planned separately.

Why can the total purchase amount be a decimal?

The calculator works in linear feet, while stores sell whole stock lengths or bundles. Convert the result to the products you can actually buy and round upward.

What if I already added waste to my measurement?

Use the true net measurement if possible. Adding a waste percentage to a quantity that already includes waste will compound the allowance and may overstate the order.
