Email CTR Calculator

This calculator measures email click-through rate by comparing tracked link clicks with successfully delivered messages. CTR shows the share of delivered emails that produced a click and is a practical indicator of message relevance, offer strength, and call-to-action performance.

Use it to compare sends, subject-audience combinations, content layouts, and lifecycle stages. The metric should be calculated with a consistent click definition, because unique clicks and total clicks answer different questions.

Campaign inputs

Delivered-to-click ratio

1. Enter delivered emails
Use messages successfully delivered after bounces are removed.

2. Enter unique clicks
Count recipients who clicked at least one tracked link.

3. Check the percentage
CTR is the share of delivered messages associated with a click.

4. Review supporting values
Clicks per thousand and the delivered-to-click ratio express the same behavior in different forms.

5. Compare like with like
Use the same tracking method and audience scope across campaigns.

Email CTR = Unique link clicks ÷ Emails delivered × 100
Clicks per 1,000 delivered = Unique link clicks ÷ Emails delivered × 1,000

Where:

  • Unique link clicks: recipients with at least one tracked click
  • Emails delivered: sent emails minus bounced messages

Assumptions: This implementation uses unique CTR based on delivered emails. Some platforms report click-to-open rate or total-click rate instead, which will produce different values.

What the result means

Percentage of delivered emails that generated a unique link click.

Use the result with consistent cost, attribution, and counting definitions when comparing campaigns.

Given:

  • Emails delivered: 128,000
  • Unique link clicks: 4,480

Calculation:
CTR = 4,480 ÷ 128,000 × 100 = 3.50%
Clicks per 1,000 = 4,480 ÷ 128,000 × 1,000 = 35

Result: 3.50% email CTR.

Interpretation: Thirty-five of every one thousand delivered messages generated a tracked unique click.

Should the denominator be sent or delivered emails?

Delivered emails are preferred because bounced messages had no realistic opportunity to generate a click. This also keeps deliverability problems separate from engagement.

Is CTR affected by open tracking changes?

CTR itself does not require an open event, so it is less exposed to open-tracking inflation. Link tracking, privacy tools, and bot clicks can still affect the result.

What is the difference between CTR and click-to-open rate?

CTR divides clicks by delivered emails. Click-to-open rate divides clicks by measured opens and focuses on engagement after an open was recorded.

Can total-click CTR exceed 100%?

It can if repeat clicks are counted. This calculator uses unique clicks and prevents clicks from exceeding delivered recipients.

How should CTR guide optimization?

Use it to test audience-message fit, content hierarchy, and calls to action. Confirm improvements with conversion and revenue data so that more clicks also represent useful behavior.
