Fleet Routing Per-Shipment Cost Estimator

The Fleet Routing Per-Shipment Cost Estimator spreads route-level operating costs across the shipments completed on a route or planning batch. It combines driver labor, fuel, vehicle, toll, and other route costs, then divides the total by shipment count.

Transport managers can use the estimate to compare route designs, understand the effect of stop density, or build a consistent internal cost baseline for shipment pricing and profitability reviews. The model uses the cost values you enter and does not automatically account for depreciation policy, overhead allocation, backhaul revenue, accessorial charges, or tax treatment unless you include them in the inputs.

Per-shipment cost = (Driver + Fuel + Vehicle + Tolls/fees + Other route cost) ÷ Shipments

Where:

  • Driver labor cost — entered in USD.
  • Fuel cost — entered in USD.
  • Vehicle/lease cost — entered in USD.
  • Tolls and fees — entered in USD.
  • Other route cost — entered in USD.
  • Shipments on route — entered in shipments.

Assumptions: all inputs refer to the same planning period or operating scenario, and the model uses the averages entered rather than forecasting external disruption.

What the result means

The result is the average route cost allocated to each shipment using an equal-per-shipment allocation.

If shipments differ materially in size, distance, handling, or service requirements, a weighted allocation method may be more appropriate than equal division.

Given:
Driver $210; fuel $120; vehicle $80; tolls $20; other $30; 23 shipments.

Calculation:
Total route cost = 210 + 120 + 80 + 20 + 30 = $460.
$460 ÷ 23 = $20.00.

Result:
$20.00 per shipment.

Interpretation:
Under equal allocation, each shipment carries $20 of the entered route cost.

Should warehouse handling be included?

Only if you want it treated as part of this route cost. You can place additional allocable cost in the other-cost field.

Can I use stops instead of shipments?

Yes if one stop is your chosen cost unit, but then interpret the result as cost per stop and keep the denominator definition consistent.

What if one shipment is much larger than the others?

Equal division may distort cost assignment. Consider weighting by pallets, weight, service time, or another driver.

Should fixed fleet overhead be included?

Include only the portion you intend to allocate to the route. The calculator does not impose a particular accounting policy.

How is this different from transit duration?

Per-shipment cost measures money allocated per shipment; transit duration measures elapsed time through the route process.
