The Fleet Routing Utilization Calculator compares used fleet operating hours with the hours that were available in the same period. It converts that relationship into a utilization percentage and shows the unused-hours balance.

The tool can support dispatch reviews, capacity planning, and period-over-period comparisons when the organization tracks vehicle availability in hours. It does not indicate whether the routes were profitable, full by weight or volume, or operationally efficient; those questions require different measures. Consistent definitions of used and available hours are essential for meaningful comparisons.

Use one consistent period such as a shift, day, or week.

Sum the fleet hours you classify as used for routing activity.

Assumptions: all inputs refer to the same planning period or operating scenario, and the model uses the averages entered rather than forecasting external disruption.

What the result means

The result is the percentage of available vehicle-hours represented by the used fleet hours entered for the same period.

A high utilization rate does not by itself indicate better economics or service. It should be considered alongside route productivity, cost, maintenance, and service performance.

Given:
Used fleet hours = 156; available fleet hours = 192.

Calculation:
156 ÷ 192 × 100 = 81.25%.

Result:
81.25% utilization and 36 unused vehicle-hours.

Interpretation:
About four-fifths of the defined fleet-hour capacity was used during the period.

Should maintenance hours be included in available hours?

That depends on your capacity definition. If vehicles under maintenance are considered unavailable, remove those hours from the denominator.

Can I calculate utilization for one vehicle?

Yes. Use that vehicle’s used and available hours for the same period.

Why does the calculator reject used hours above available hours?

Within this model, that indicates inconsistent definitions or data. Reconcile the period or availability basis before interpreting the percentage.

Is utilization the same as load factor?

No. This calculator uses time capacity. Load factor or trailer fill measures physical carrying capacity.

Can low utilization still be intentional?

Yes. Spare capacity may support service resilience, maintenance windows, seasonal peaks, or uneven demand.
