Fleet Routing Transit Duration Estimator

The Fleet Routing Transit Duration Estimator combines driving time, planned service time at stops, depot or terminal handling, and a schedule buffer into one route-duration estimate. It is suited to scenario planning when you already have an approximate route distance or drive time and need a transparent total-time calculation.

Fleet planners can use the result to compare route structures, test the effect of more stops, or check whether a route appears compatible with a working-time envelope before applying detailed operational constraints. The estimate is only as good as the entered averages and does not automatically model live traffic, mandatory breaks, driver-hours regulations, or individual appointment windows.

Route duration (hours) = Driving hours + (Stops × Minutes per stop ÷ 60) + Depot time + Buffer

Assumptions: all inputs refer to the same planning period or operating scenario, and the model uses the averages entered rather than forecasting external disruption.

What the result means

The result is the estimated total elapsed route duration based on driving, stop service, depot time, and the chosen buffer.

This model is a planning estimate. Apply any legal driver-hours, rest-break, appointment, or local operating constraints separately.

Given:
Drive = 7.2 hours; 10 stops; 15 minutes per stop; depot = 0.75 hour; buffer = 0.8 hour.

Calculation:
Stop service = 10 × 15 ÷ 60 = 2.5 hours.
Total = 7.2 + 2.5 + 0.75 + 0.8 = 11.25 hours.

Result:
11.25 hours.

Interpretation:
The route plan uses about 11 hours 15 minutes of elapsed time under the stated averages.

Should traffic be in driving time or buffer?

Use either approach consistently. If your driving estimate already reflects expected traffic, avoid adding the same delay again in the buffer.

Can service time vary by stop?

Yes in reality, but this model uses one average. For mixed stop types, use a weighted average or run separate scenarios.

Does the calculator include mandatory driver breaks?

No. Add planned break time only if appropriate for your internal estimate, and evaluate applicable working-time rules separately.

What if the route does not return to the depot?

Use driving and depot inputs that match the actual start and end points in your route definition.

How does this differ from route capacity?

Duration estimates how long one route plan takes. Capacity estimates how many route cycles or shipments the available fleet can support.
