Homework Course Calculator

The Homework Course Calculator projects a final homework average from work already graded and work still remaining. It uses earned and possible points to date, then applies an expected percentage to the remaining points.

This point-based model is useful when assignments have different maximum scores because it weights each assignment by its points rather than treating every score equally. It can show whether a current average is likely to rise or fall and how much the remaining homework can change the outcome. The projection assumes future work matches the entered expected percentage.

Expected future points = Remaining homework points × Expected future percentage
Projected final average = (Points earned so far + Expected future points) ÷ (Points possible so far + Remaining homework points) × 100

What the result means

The projection combines actual past points with assumed future performance. It shows the final homework average if the remaining work matches the selected expectation.

Extra credit, dropped assignments, category weighting, late penalties, and grading curves are not included unless they are reflected in the point totals.

Given

A student has 425 of 500 points, 300 points remain, and the expected score on remaining homework is 88%.

Calculation

Expected future points = 300 × 0.88 = 264. Projected earned points = 425 + 264 = 689. Final possible points = 500 + 300 = 800. Projected average = 689 ÷ 800 × 100 = 86.125%.

Result

The projected final homework average is 86.1%, compared with a current average of 85.0%.

Why use points instead of averaging percentages?

Point weighting correctly gives larger assignments more influence when assignments have different maximum scores.

Can earned points exceed possible points?

Not in the standard model. If extra credit exists, add it according to the course policy rather than entering an earned value above possible points.

What if no homework points remain?

Enter zero remaining points. The projected average will equal the current point-based average.

How should I choose the expected future percentage?

Use a realistic estimate based on recent comparable assignments, then test optimistic and conservative scenarios.

Does this work for category-weighted gradebooks?

Only for the homework category itself. The homework category may then need to be combined with other categories using their course weights.
