Homework Grade Calculator

The Homework Grade Calculator converts completed homework points into a percentage and estimates the weighted contribution of homework to a course grade. It also shows points still available from the entered maximum.

Use it after several assignments or for a full homework category. The calculation is most reliable when earned and possible points follow the same grading rules, including any dropped assignments, bonus points, or late penalties already applied by the instructor.

Weighted course contribution

Adjusted earned points

1. Enter earned points
Use the total after grading adjustments and penalties.

2. Enter possible points
Add the maximum points for the same set of homework assignments.

3. Set the homework weight
Enter the percentage of the course grade assigned to homework.

4. Add extra credit
Include bonus points only when they increase earned points without increasing points possible.

5. Review the percentage and contribution
The homework percentage describes category performance; weighted points show its contribution to the course grade.

Adjusted earned points = Points earned + Extra credit points Homework percentage = Adjusted earned points ÷ Points possible × 100 Weighted course contribution = Homework percentage × Homework weight ÷ 100

Extra credit may produce a percentage above 100% if the grading policy allows it. Points not earned are not shown below zero.

What the result means

Homework contributes 21.5 points toward the overall course grade under a 25% category weight.

Results are planning estimates and should be checked against the grading or scheduling rules that apply to your course.

Given:
420 points earned
500 points possible
25% homework weight
10 extra credit points

Calculation:
Adjusted points = 420 + 10 = 430
Homework percentage = 430 ÷ 500 × 100 = 86%
Weighted contribution = 86 × 0.25 = 21.5 grade points

Result:
86.00% homework grade

Homework contributes 21.5 points toward the overall course grade under a 25% category weight.

Can the homework percentage exceed 100%?

Yes, when extra credit raises earned points above possible points and the course policy permits it.

Should late penalties be entered separately?

No separate field is provided. Enter the earned-point total after the late penalty has been applied.

What if assignments have different point values?

Add all earned points and all possible points. This automatically gives larger assignments more influence.

Why are points not earned never negative?

Extra credit can push adjusted points above the maximum. The display keeps missed points at zero rather than showing a negative shortfall.

How is this different from a homework GPA calculator?

This calculator returns a percentage and weighted grade contribution. A GPA calculator maps performance to grade points on a selected scale.
