Homework Exam Calculator

The Homework Exam Calculator estimates the exam score needed to reach a target combined grade when homework and an exam make up the selected portions of a course result. It also shows the weighted homework contribution and the remaining points the exam must supply.

This is useful before a midterm, final, or unit test when a student already knows a homework average and wants a concrete score target. The calculation assumes the two entered weights are the only components being modeled. If a course also includes projects, participation, or quizzes, their contribution should be incorporated into the current grade or modeled separately.

Required exam score = (Target combined grade − Homework average × Homework weight) ÷ Exam weight

Enter each weight as a percentage, then convert it to a decimal in the calculation. The homework and exam weights must total 100% for this two-component model.

What the result means

A result at or below 100% is the exam score needed under the selected weights. A result above 100% means the target cannot be reached with the exam alone under this model.

This estimate does not apply grade caps, extra credit, dropped assignments, curves, or institution-specific rounding rules.

Given

Homework average is 86%, homework is 40% of the combined grade, the exam is 60%, and the target is 90%.

Calculation

Homework contribution = 86 × 0.40 = 34.4 points. Exam contribution needed = 90 − 34.4 = 55.6 points. Required exam score = 55.6 ÷ 0.60 = 92.67%.

Result

The student needs about 92.7% on the exam to finish this two-part grade at 90%.

Why must the weights total 100%?

This calculator models only homework and one exam. If other components exist, adjust the model so all included components together represent the full grade.

What does a result above 100% mean?

The target is mathematically out of reach through the exam alone. A lower target, extra credit, or a different grading rule would be needed.

Can I use this for a final exam?

Yes, provided the current homework average and final-exam weight accurately represent the two modeled portions.

Should I enter 0.40 or 40 for a 40% weight?

Enter 40. The calculator converts the percentage to 0.40 internally.

Does the calculator include rounding by the instructor?

No. It shows the unrounded mathematical requirement; the course policy may round grades differently.
