Homework Quiz Calculator

The Homework Quiz Calculator combines a homework average and quiz average using their selected grade weights. It shows the combined result and the contribution from each category.

This calculator is useful when homework and quizzes form a shared unit grade, progress grade, or simplified course model. Weighted calculation matters whenever the two categories do not count equally. The model requires the entered weights to total 100%, and it does not include exams, projects, participation, or other categories unless they have already been folded into one of the two averages.

Combined grade = Homework average × Homework weight + Quiz average × Quiz weight

Convert each weight from a percentage to a decimal before multiplying. The two weights must total 100% in this two-category model.

What the result means

The combined result reflects both category averages in proportion to their weights. A lower-scoring category has less effect when its weight is smaller.

The calculation does not model dropped quizzes, replacement grades, extra credit, or category-specific rounding.

Given

Homework average is 89% with a 65% weight. Quiz average is 76% with a 35% weight.

Calculation

Homework contribution = 89 × 0.65 = 57.85 points. Quiz contribution = 76 × 0.35 = 26.60 points. Combined grade = 57.85 + 26.60 = 84.45%.

Result

The combined homework and quiz grade is 84.5% after rounding.

Why is the result not halfway between the two averages?

It is halfway only when both categories have a 50% weight. Unequal weights pull the result toward the more heavily weighted category.

Can the weights be 70% and 20%?

Not in this two-category model because they would total 90%. Include the missing category or rescale the two weights to represent the modeled portion.

Should I use quiz points or quiz average?

Enter the overall quiz percentage after any course rules such as dropped scores have been applied.

What if the course has exams too?

Use this result as the combined homework-and-quiz portion, then combine it with exams using a broader weighted-grade calculator.

How can I see which category needs more improvement?

Compare the category gap and weights. Improving the lower category matters most when it also carries a substantial weight.
