Estimate packaging line throughput from effective cycle time and available running time. The calculator converts the line’s production pace into expected packages per hour and total packages for the selected period, making it useful for campaign sizing, shift scheduling, and capacity comparisons.

Use a cycle time that reflects the packaging line’s actual constraint rather than the fastest individual machine. The estimate assumes a steady pace during the entered available time, so planned changeovers, jams, material waits, and quality holds should either be reflected in the available minutes or evaluated separately.

Cycle time is the effective average seconds per finished package. Available production time is the time the packaging line is expected to run within the planning period. This steady-state estimate does not separately model downtime or yield loss.

What the result means

Use the result as an operational planning indicator for the defined production boundary and time period.

Actual production can differ when downtime, variability, quality rules, parallel resources, or product mix are handled differently from the assumptions entered here.

Given: cycle time = 45 seconds per package; available time = 480 minutes.

Calculation: Hourly throughput = 3,600 ÷ 45 = 80 packages/hour. Total output = 480 × 60 ÷ 45 = 640 packages.

Result: Estimated output is 640 packages over the 480-minute period.

The estimate represents a steady average pace and should be reduced if the entered available time still contains significant stops or losses.

Should I use ideal or actual cycle time?

Use the effective cycle time that matches your planning purpose. An ideal cycle time shows theoretical capacity; an observed average cycle time gives a more realistic run-rate estimate.

Does the estimate include downtime?

Only if downtime has already been removed from available production time or is embedded in the effective cycle time. Otherwise the result can overstate achievable output.

What happens if cycle time improves?

Throughput rises inversely with cycle time. For example, reducing cycle time by 10% increases theoretical throughput by about 11.1% if all other conditions stay unchanged.

Can I use this for multiple parallel lines?

Yes, but calculate each line separately when their cycle times differ. If identical lines run independently, you can multiply one-line output by the number of active lines.

How is throughput different from takt time?

Throughput describes output capability from production pace. Takt time starts from required demand and tells you the maximum average time allowed per required unit.
