Pallet Loading Per-Shipment Cost Estimator

The Pallet Loading Per-Shipment Cost Estimator calculates the average pallet-preparation and handling cost assigned to each shipment sharing a pallet. It adds pallet material cost, labor or handling, wrapping or securement, and other pallet-level charges, then divides that total by the number of shipments represented on the pallet.

The estimate can support warehouse costing, fulfillment analysis, customer profitability reviews, or comparisons between palletization methods. Because it uses an equal split, the result works best when shipments are reasonably similar or when the organization intentionally allocates shared pallet cost by shipment count. If shipments differ substantially in size, weight, stops, or labor required, a weighted allocation may better reflect how the cost is consumed.

1. Enter pallet material cost
Include the pallet cost you intend to assign to the load, whether purchased, pooled, or internally charged.

This is an equal allocation by shipment count. It does not allocate cost based on weight, cube, revenue, carton count, or handling complexity.

What the result means

The result is the average share of the entered pallet-level preparation and handling costs assigned to each shipment on the pallet.

If the pallet is dedicated to one shipment, enter one shipment and the result will equal the full pallet-level cost.

Given: pallet material = $20, loading labor = $36, wrap and securement = $9, other pallet-level cost = $5, with 7 shipments on the pallet.

Calculation: Total pallet-level cost = 20 + 36 + 9 + 5 = $70. Per-shipment cost = 70 / 7 = $10.00. Material and securement share = (20 + 9) / 70 × 100 = 41.43%.

Result: Average pallet-loading cost per shipment = $10.00.

With equal allocation, each of the seven shipments receives $10 of the shared pallet-level cost.

Should freight charges be included here?

Only if you intentionally want freight included in the pallet-level allocation. The default fields are better suited to preparation, material, and handling costs.

What if the pallet is used for one customer shipment only?

Enter one shipment. The per-shipment result will then equal the total pallet-level cost.

Can reusable pallet cost be prorated?

Yes. Instead of entering the full purchase price, enter the per-use cost or internal charge that matches your costing policy.

How should very different shipments be allocated?

Equal allocation may not be representative. Consider weighting the total pallet-level cost by each shipment’s cube, weight, carton count, or handling effort.

How is this different from container per-shipment cost?

This calculator focuses on shared costs incurred at the pallet level. Container-level costing covers broader load or transportation charges spread across shipments in a container.
