Pet Daycare Dose Schedule Planner

The Pet Daycare Dose Schedule Planner counts medication administration events that occur while a pet is attending daycare, based only on an existing prescribed frequency and a first due time. It can help owners and staff prepare a medication handoff when a dose is already scheduled to occur during the daycare window.

This planner does not recommend a drug, calculate dose amount, or decide whether a scheduled administration can be moved. FDA pet-medication guidance advises owners to follow veterinarian instructions and to ask the veterinarian what to do when timing or a missed dose is uncertain. Use this page only to organize the timing information you have already been given.

Daycare duration — Length of the care window in hours.

Administrations per day — Frequency already provided for the medication.

First due time — Hours after drop-off until the next scheduled administration.

Assumptions: Recurring administrations are modeled as evenly spaced. Prescribed clock times, meal timing, route, dose amount, and special instructions are outside the calculation.

What the result means

The main result summarizes scheduled administrations using the values entered above.

Given:

• 3 pets on the same schedule
• 11-hour daycare window
• 3 prescribed administrations per day
• First administration 2 hours after drop-off

Calculation:

Interval = 24 ÷ 3 = 8 hours
Events per pet = floor((11 − 2) ÷ 8) + 1 = 2
Total administrations = 2 × 3 = 6

Result: 6 scheduled administrations

Two recurring administration times fall within the daycare window for each of the three pets. The actual written medication instructions remain controlling.

Can this tool create a medication schedule from scratch?

No. It requires a frequency and timing that already exist. Medication selection, dose, route, duration, and schedule changes belong with the prescribing veterinarian.

What if the medication is given only as needed?

A fixed recurring calculation may not be appropriate for an as-needed instruction. Use the veterinarian’s criteria and written directions rather than inventing a daily frequency.

Does pickup time count as an administration time?

The calculation includes an event exactly at the entered end of the daycare window. If the handoff occurs before that event should be administered, adjust the window or document the responsibility clearly.

What should staff do if a dose was already given before drop-off?

Enter the time until the next prescribed administration, not the time since the previous one. If the next due time is uncertain, confirm it with the owner and veterinarian rather than guessing.

Why should medication handoffs be documented separately?

The calculator only produces a timing count. A proper handoff may also need the medication name, prescribed dose, route, storage, administration notes, and contact information according to the facility’s procedures and veterinary instructions.
