This calculator is useful for pen-level or group-level performance review when feed intake and weight gain cover the same animals and dates. It can also support scenario comparisons between feeding periods, provided weigh procedures and feed accounting are consistent. A simple feed-to-gain ratio does not adjust for differences in initial body weight, days on feed, carcass composition, maintenance requirements, shrink, mortality, or feed wastage unless those effects are already reflected in the data you enter. Use it as one performance indicator rather than a complete measure of feeding economics.

  • Feed dry matter consumed = total ration dry matter eaten during the period, in kg DM.
  • Total live-weight gain = net gain for the same cattle group and period, in kg.
  • Feed conversion ratio = kg DM consumed per kg live-weight gain.

Assumptions: The model assumes feed consumed and live-weight gain are measured over matching population and time boundaries. It does not make automatic adjustments for cattle entering or leaving the group, death loss, shrink, or unconsumed feed.

What the result means

A lower ratio means less feed dry matter was used per unit of measured live-weight gain under the entered accounting boundaries.

For comparisons, use consistent dry-matter conversions, weigh procedures, inventory treatment, and measurement periods.

Given: 142,000 kg of feed dry matter consumed and 21,000 kg of total live-weight gain.

Calculation:
Feed conversion ratio = 142,000 ÷ 21,000 = 6.7619
Gain-to-feed = 21,000 ÷ 142,000 = 0.1479 kg gain per kg DM

Result: feed conversion ratio ≈ 6.762.

The group used about 6.762 kg of feed dry matter for each kilogram of measured live-weight gain during the period.

Why use feed dry matter instead of as-fed feed?

Dry matter removes the effect of feed moisture, which makes comparisons more meaningful when ration water content changes. Convert as-fed quantities to dry matter before using this calculator.

Is a lower feed conversion ratio better?

With otherwise comparable cattle and measurement methods, a lower feed-per-gain ratio means less dry matter was recorded per kilogram of live-weight gain. It should still be interpreted alongside health, days on feed, gain rate, carcass outcomes, and feed cost.

How should cattle entering or leaving a pen be handled?

Use a consistent inventory and weight accounting method so feed and gain refer to the same animal exposure. Transfers or removals can make a simple group ratio misleading if they are ignored.

What if total live-weight gain is zero or negative?

The calculator will not compute a feed conversion ratio because dividing by zero or a negative gain is not meaningful for this feed-per-gain model.

Is feed conversion the same as cost of gain?

No. Feed conversion is a physical efficiency ratio. Cost of gain also depends on feed prices and any other costs included in your accounting.
