Product Carbon Emission Footprint Calculator

This calculator builds a product carbon footprint from three user-entered life-cycle emission components: materials and production, distribution and use, and end-of-life. It is intended for teams that have already estimated each component in a common CO2e unit and want a transparent total and contribution split for one product or defined functional unit.

The calculator does not supply life-cycle emission factors or define system boundaries. Those choices can materially change a product footprint, so the page keeps them as part of the source analysis and only consolidates the resulting component totals you provide.

1. Define the product unit

Product footprint = Production emissions + Distribution/use emissions + End-of-life emissions Stage share (%) = Stage emissions ÷ Product footprint × 100

All components must use the same CO2e unit, system boundary, and functional unit. The calculator does not generate life-cycle inventory factors.

What is a functional unit?

It is the reference basis for the footprint, such as one product, one service delivered, or a stated quantity. Every life-cycle component should be calculated for the same basis.

Can I enter tCO2e instead of kgCO2e?

The page labels results in kgCO2e, so convert all inputs to kilograms of CO2e before entering them.

What if use-phase emissions are zero?

Enter zero if the product has no modeled use-phase emissions under your chosen boundary. The total will then come from the remaining components.

Does this calculator perform a life-cycle assessment?

No. It adds life-cycle emission totals you already have. Boundary selection, data quality, allocation, and emission-factor choices are separate analytical steps.

How can I use the stage shares?

They can help identify where design, sourcing, logistics, or end-of-life changes may have the greatest potential effect on the modeled footprint.
