The result is useful for eco-design scenarios, supplier improvement targets, or product roadmap planning where teams need to convert a percentage ambition into a concrete footprint threshold. It does not determine whether the target meets any product-label, procurement, or climate-claim rule.

Per-unit reduction = Baseline footprint × Reduction target Target footprint = Baseline footprint − Per-unit reduction Aggregate reduction (tCO2e) = Per-unit reduction (kgCO2e) × Units ÷ 1,000

Does production volume change the per-unit target?

No. The target per unit depends only on the baseline footprint and reduction percentage. Volume is used to show the aggregate effect.

Can the reduction target exceed 100%?

No. The calculator limits the target to 0% through 100% because a simple percentage reduction from the baseline cannot produce a negative footprint.

Should the baseline and target use the same system boundary?

Yes. A reduction comparison is most meaningful when both footprints use the same functional unit, life-cycle boundary, and consistent methodology.

Does this calculator tell me which design changes are needed?

No. It defines the numerical target. Engineering, sourcing, material, logistics, and use-phase changes determine how that target might be achieved.

How is this different from a corporate reduction target?

A product target is expressed per defined product unit, while a corporate target applies to an organizational emissions inventory. Production volume can affect the total even when the per-unit footprint falls.
