Residual emissions = Product footprint × (1 − Reduction % / 100)

Base offsets = Residual emissions × Offset coverage % / 100

Offsets to retire = Base offsets × (1 + Buffer % / 100)

Where:
Product footprint = product emissions in metric tonnes of CO₂-equivalent (tCO₂e).
Reduction % = planned direct reduction before offsets.
Offset coverage % = share of residual emissions selected for compensation.
Buffer % = optional extra retirement above the base quantity.

Assumptions: One offset credit is commonly denominated as one metric tonne of CO₂e, but credit eligibility and claim rules vary by program and jurisdiction.

What the result means

The result is the estimated quantity of offsets to retire after planned product-level reductions and the selected coverage percentage.

This is a quantity estimator, not a determination that a particular credit, registry, or environmental claim is valid for your use case.

Given:
Product footprint = 2.4 tCO₂e
Planned reduction = 25%
Offset coverage = 100%
Buffer = 5%

Calculation:
Residual = 2.4 × (1 − 0.25) = 1.8 tCO₂e
Base offsets = 1.8 × 1.00 = 1.8 tCO₂e
Offsets to retire = 1.8 × 1.05 = 1.89 tCO₂e

Result:
1.89 tCO₂e

Interpretation: After the planned 25% reduction, retiring about 1.89 tonnes of eligible offsets would cover the residual footprint plus the 5% buffer.

Should I offset before or after product reductions?

For this calculator, offsets are applied after the direct reduction percentage. That keeps avoided emissions separate from residual emissions that are compensated externally.

Can I enter a footprint in kilograms of CO₂e?

Convert kilograms to metric tonnes before entering the value: divide kgCO₂e by 1,000. The calculator reports offset quantities in tCO₂e.

Why include a retirement buffer?

A buffer can cover rounding, estimation uncertainty, or an internal over-retirement policy. It should not be used to hide uncertainty in the underlying product footprint.

What if I only want to offset part of the residual footprint?

Set Offset coverage below 100%. For example, 50% coverage retires credits for half of the post-reduction residual emissions.

Is this the same as reducing the product footprint?

No. Direct reductions change the emissions associated with the product, while offsets compensate for a selected amount of residual emissions outside that footprint calculation.
