Quality Inspection Throughput Estimator

The Quality Inspection Throughput Estimator calculates how much inspection work is completed per hour from a known output count and productive time. It is intended for inspection stations and quality teams that need a quick, comparable rate for capacity planning, staffing, and bottleneck checks.

Use the result to compare shifts, stations, crews, or planning assumptions on the same time basis. The estimate describes observed throughput, not the maximum theoretical capacity of the process; interruptions, job complexity, sampling rules, and mix changes can all move the actual rate.

Throughput = Completed Output ÷ Productive Time

Completed Output is the number of inspected units finished in the measurement period. Productive Time is the number of hours used to produce that output. The result is expressed as units per hour.

This model assumes the entered time is positive and that the completed count and time cover the same operating window. It does not adjust for differing product mix, inspection depth, task complexity, or waiting time unless those effects are already reflected in the entered productive time.

What the result means

Use the result as an operating estimate for the specific period and definitions represented by the entered inputs.

Compare periods only when units, counting rules, and time definitions are consistent.

Given: 480 inspected units over 8 productive hours.

Calculation: 480 ÷ 8 = 60 units/hour.

Result: The measured throughput is 60 units per hour.

Interpretation: That rate can be used as a baseline for comparable periods, provided the work mix and definition of productive time stay reasonably consistent.

Should breaks and waiting time be included in productive time?

Include only the time basis you want the rate to represent. For a net processing rate, exclude unrelated breaks and waiting; for an end-to-end observed rate, include them consistently.

Can I compare two shifts with this result?

Yes, if both shifts count completed output the same way and use the same definition of productive time. Large differences in job mix or inspection depth can make a simple rate comparison misleading.

What happens if productive time is zero?

A throughput rate cannot be calculated from zero hours because the formula would divide by zero. Enter a positive time value that corresponds to the completed output.

Does a higher throughput always mean better performance?

No. Faster output can be useful, but quality, safety, task completeness, and rework still matter. Use throughput alongside those measures rather than as the only performance signal.

How is throughput different from takt time?

Throughput describes what was actually completed per unit of time. Takt time starts from available time and required demand to show the pace needed to meet that demand.
