What the result means

The main result is the estimated number of scheduled focus minutes that remain effective after interruption and recovery losses.

Recovery cost is an assumption and varies by person and task. Use observed values when possible.

Given: Four 60-minute blocks, six interruptions, 5 minutes per interruption, and 8 recovery minutes each.

Calculation: Scheduled focus = 4 × 60 = 240 minutes. Direct loss = 6 × 5 = 30 minutes. Recovery loss = 6 × 8 = 48 minutes. Effective focus = 240 − 30 − 48 = 162 minutes.

Result: Effective focus is estimated at 162 minutes, retaining 67.5% of scheduled focus time.

Why count recovery separately from interruption duration?

An interruption can end before concentration is fully restored. The separate recovery input represents that additional transition cost.

What if interruptions happen outside focus blocks?

Count only interruptions that reduce the scheduled focus time being evaluated. Otherwise the loss will be overstated.

Can effective focus become negative?

No. The displayed result is floored at zero, although the loss values may be greater than scheduled focus.

How should I estimate recovery time?

Use time-tracking observations or a conservative personal estimate. Complex tasks may require longer recovery than routine work.

Does this measure quality of concentration?

No. It estimates retained time. The quality and usefulness of that time depend on the task, environment, and individual.
