Lost time = Planned breaks + (Distractions × Minutes per distraction) + (Task switches × Refocus minutes per switch)
Focused time = Max(Total session length − Lost time, 0)
Focus ratio = Focused time ÷ Total session length × 100

What the result means

The focus ratio shows the share of the session remaining for concentrated work after the entered losses.

Some break time can improve performance even though it reduces active focus minutes. The result measures time allocation, not work quality.

Given:
A 240-minute session, 30 minutes of breaks, 8 distractions at 3 minutes each, and 5 task switches at 4 minutes each.

Calculation:
Distraction loss = 8 × 3 = 24 minutes.
Switching loss = 5 × 4 = 20 minutes.
Total lost time = 30 + 24 + 20 = 74 minutes.
Focused time = 240 − 74 = 166 minutes.
Focus ratio = 166 ÷ 240 × 100 = 69.17%.

Result:
The session provides about 2 hours 46 minutes of focused time, with a focus ratio of 69.2%.

Should planned breaks be treated as wasted time?

No. They are simply excluded from focused minutes. Appropriate breaks may support better concentration during the remaining time.

How do I estimate refocus time?

Track several sessions and measure the gap between switching tasks and returning to productive work. Use the average.

Can focused time become negative?

No. The calculator floors focused time at zero when entered losses exceed the session length.

Does background music count as a distraction?

Only if it repeatedly interrupts attention or lengthens task completion. The calculator does not classify activities automatically.

How is focus ratio different from productivity?

Focus ratio measures concentration time. Productivity also depends on task difficulty, skill, tools, and output quality.
