Student Device Content Production Time Estimator

Estimate the production time required to prepare student-device learning content from the number of digital content packages, build time per package, reusable-material share, and final testing time. The result helps curriculum, IT, and instructional-design teams plan workload for app-based lessons, device setup guides, digital activities, or other materials that must be prepared for a device program. It is useful for comparing a greenfield rollout with an update that can reuse a meaningful portion of existing content.

The calculator estimates content-production labor only. Hardware imaging, physical deployment, procurement, classroom delivery, and technical support are outside the model unless their hours are deliberately included in the inputs.

Production hours = (Content Packages × Hours per package) × (1 − Reusable share % ÷ 100) + Review/QA hours

Gross package build time is discounted by the reusable-material percentage, then shared review or testing time is added.

What the result means

The result is the estimated staff production time after crediting reusable materials and adding the specified final review or quality-assurance work.

Use the same scope when estimating hours per unit and review time so the same activity is not counted twice.

Given: 24 content packages, 3 hours per package, 35% reusable material, and 14 testing/QA hours.

Calculation: Gross build time = 24 × 3 = 72 hours. Reuse savings = 72 × 0.35 = 25.2 hours. Total = 72 − 25.2 + 14 = 60.8 hours.

Result: Estimated production time = 60.8 hours.

The reusable content reduces package-level build work substantially, while final device testing still adds a shared block of time.

Does this include configuring the physical devices?

Not unless you intentionally include that work in the build or QA inputs. The default interpretation is content preparation and testing rather than fleet deployment.

What is a content package?

Use a unit that makes sense for your project, such as a lesson bundle, app-based activity set, digital module, or device-ready resource package. Keep the unit consistent when estimating hours.

How do I estimate reusable material share?

Estimate how much of the normal package-level production effort can be avoided because usable content already exists. Reuse may still require testing or adaptation.

Should device compatibility testing go in QA time?

Yes, when compatibility testing is a shared project step rather than work already included in the per-package estimate.

How is this different from cost per learner?

Production time estimates labor hours needed to create the content. Cost per learner translates program costs into an average amount per learner served.
