What the result means

The main result is the average modeled cost assigned to each learner for the same period or cohort represented by the inputs.

A lower average cost at higher enrollment does not by itself indicate better quality or sufficient operational capacity.

Given: 600 learners, $72,000 in shared device-program costs, and $38 variable cost per learner.

Calculation: Variable cost = 600 × $38 = $22,800. Total cost = $72,000 + $22,800 = $94,800. Cost per learner = $94,800 ÷ 600 = $158.00.

Result: Average student-device cost per learner = $158.00.

The modeled amount consists of $120.00 of shared cost per learner plus $38.00 of variable cost.

Should I enter the full purchase price of devices?

Only if the modeled period and your budgeting method call for it. Some organizations instead use annualized or depreciated hardware cost, so match the fixed-cost input to your reporting approach.

What can go into variable cost per learner?

Per-user software, consumable accessories, support allocations, or other costs that scale with learners can fit the model. Avoid double-counting items already included in shared costs.

What if devices last several years?

Use a period-consistent cost basis, such as annual depreciation or an annualized replacement allocation, if that matches your planning method. The calculator itself does not choose an accounting treatment.

Why can the average fall as more learners are added?

The shared program cost is spread across a larger learner base. The model assumes no new fixed-cost step is triggered by the larger scale.

How is this different from learner capacity?

Capacity estimates how many learners the fleet can support. Cost per learner estimates the average program cost allocated to each learner served.
