The Study Revision Calculator estimates how many topics can be revised before an exam and whether the available time is sufficient for the planned coverage. It combines days available, daily study time, average minutes per topic, and a contingency buffer.

Use the capacity result to prioritize topics, set a daily revision target, or identify a shortfall before the schedule becomes urgent. The buffer reduces usable time to allow for breaks, difficult material, and schedule disruption. The calculator assumes every topic requires the same average revision time, so split unusually large topics into smaller units.

1. Count revision topics

Total minutes = Days × Minutes per day
Usable minutes = Total minutes × (1 − Buffer percentage)
Topic capacity = floor(Usable minutes ÷ Minutes per topic)

The floor function counts only topics that can be fully revised. Coverage rate compares capacity with the number of planned topics and is capped at 100%.

What the result means

The main result is the number of complete average-sized topics that fit into the buffered revision time.

Recall practice, mock exams, and spaced repetition may require different time assumptions than first-pass review.

Given: 42 topics, seven days, 120 minutes per day, 25 minutes per topic, and a 15% buffer.

Calculation:
Total time = 7 × 120 = 840 minutes
Usable time = 840 × 0.85 = 714 minutes
Capacity = floor(714 ÷ 25) = 28 topics

Result: The plan can cover about 28 complete topics, leaving a shortfall of 14 topics.

Why is topic capacity rounded down?

Only fully completed topics are counted. The remaining minutes may still be useful but do not complete another average topic.

How should I choose the buffer?

Use a value based on schedule uncertainty and past interruptions. The calculator does not prescribe one universal percentage.

What if topics vary greatly in difficulty?

Split large topics into smaller units or calculate easy and difficult groups separately with different time estimates.

Does this include breaks?

The buffer can represent breaks, but you may instead enter only focused minutes per day and reserve the buffer for uncertainty.
