What the result means

The main result is the amount each passenger pays under an equal split.

This model calculates the tip on both the fare and shared extras. Adjust the extras entry if your group tips on a different base.

Given: A $48.50 fare, $7.25 in tolls and surcharges, an 18% tip, and three passengers.

Calculation: Pre-tip total = $48.50 + $7.25 = $55.75. Tip = $55.75 × 18% = $10.04. Final total = $65.79. Share = $65.79 ÷ 3 = $21.93.

Result: Each passenger pays $21.93 after rounding to cents.

Should the driver be counted as a passenger?

Count only the people who have agreed to share the fare. A group member who is driving a private vehicle would not use this taxi split.

How do I handle an app discount?

Enter the net fare after the discount when the discount applies to the whole ride.

Can one passenger pay a larger share?

This calculator produces an equal split only. For unequal shares, calculate the final total here and allocate it using the group’s chosen percentages.

Why might the shares not add perfectly after rounding?

Rounding each share to cents can create a one- or two-cent difference. Assign the small remainder to one passenger.

Are tolls tipped in every location?

Practices vary. This model includes extras in the tip base, but you can reduce the entered extras or tip rate to match the group’s approach.
