Terrarium Capacity Estimator

The Terrarium Capacity Estimator calculates approximate enclosure volume from its internal length, width, and height, then converts that volume into liters and U.S. gallons. It also estimates usable volume after applying a user-defined occupancy reduction for substrate, décor, false bottoms, rocks, branches, or other space-displacing materials.

This is useful when comparing enclosure sizes, estimating the amount of substrate or misting volume needed, or checking whether accessories will materially reduce free internal space. Because many terrariums have vents, sloped fronts, rounded corners, thick backgrounds, or irregular hardscape, the result is a geometric estimate rather than a certified capacity. For best results, measure the interior dimensions that actually contain usable space rather than relying only on external product dimensions. Keeping the displacement assumption explicit also makes side-by-side comparisons between different layouts more consistent.

1. Measure the interior length
Measure the usable inside span from one end of the enclosure to the other, in centimeters.

2. Measure width and height
Use internal dimensions so glass thickness, framing, and external trim do not inflate the estimate.

3. Estimate displacement
Enter the approximate percentage of geometric volume occupied by substrate, backgrounds, drainage layers, décor, or hardscape. Use 0% if you only need gross volume.

4. Read gross and usable capacity
The result shows usable liters after displacement, while the breakdown preserves the gross volume and gallon conversions.

5. Allow for irregular shapes
For sloped, curved, or heavily sculpted enclosures, treat the result as an approximation and measure individual sections if higher precision is required.

The model treats the enclosure as a rectangular prism. The displacement percentage is a user-supplied approximation for space occupied by materials or décor.

What the result means

The main result is the estimated free internal volume after subtracting the percentage of space you mark as displaced.

Actual usable capacity can differ in irregular enclosures or when manufacturer dimensions are external rather than internal.

Given:
60 cm × 45 cm × 60 cm interior dimensions; 15% estimated displacement.

Calculation:
Gross volume = 60 × 45 × 60 ÷ 1,000 = 162 L. Displaced volume = 162 × 0.15 = 24.3 L. Usable volume = 162 − 24.3 = 137.7 L.

Result:
137.7 L usable volume, about 36.38 U.S. gallons.

Interpretation:
The décor and substrate assumption reduces the geometric capacity by 24.3 liters.

Should I use internal or external measurements?

Use internal measurements whenever possible because the calculator is estimating space inside the enclosure. External dimensions can overstate capacity due to glass, frames, and built-in structures.

What should I enter for displacement?

Use your own estimate of the fraction occupied by substrate, false bottoms, backgrounds, rocks, and décor. Enter 0% if you want pure geometric volume without any reduction.

Does usable volume mean the enclosure is suitable for a particular species?

No. Volume alone does not determine animal suitability; floor area, height, ventilation, temperature gradients, behavior, and species-specific husbandry also matter.

Can this handle a triangular or curved terrarium?

Not directly. The calculator assumes a rectangular prism, so irregular enclosures should be split into simpler shapes or measured with a more specific geometric method.

Why are gallons slightly different from product labels?

Manufacturers may round dimensions or use nominal capacities. This calculator converts the dimensions you enter, so small differences are normal.
