Vertical Farm Feed Conversion Calculator

This calculator expresses a vertical farm's tracked production-input mass relative to marketable harvest mass. Although “feed conversion” is more common in livestock production, the same ratio format can be used as a simple material-efficiency indicator when a farm deliberately defines the input being tracked—for example, dry nutrient salts or another standardized consumable mass.

The result should only be compared across periods or facilities when the input boundary is identical. It does not measure energy, water, labor, or total resource efficiency, and it should not mix unlike materials into one mass without a clear accounting method.

What the result means

A lower ratio means less of the specifically tracked input mass was used per kilogram of marketable harvest.

Define the tracked input consistently before comparing this ratio across crops, batches, or facilities.

Given:

  • Marketable harvest = 2,560 kg

Calculation:
640 ÷ 2,560 = 0.25 kg/kg

Result:

Interpretation:
The batch used 0.25 kg of the defined input for each kilogram of marketable harvest.

What input should I use in a vertical-farm conversion ratio?

Use one clearly defined mass-based input that you intentionally want to track. The metric is only meaningful when that boundary stays consistent.

Is a lower ratio always better?

A lower ratio means less of the tracked input per kilogram of marketable harvest, but it does not show quality, crop time, energy use, water use, or profit.

Can I combine several different inputs into one mass?

Only if your accounting method explicitly defines that combined mass and you use it consistently. Adding unlike materials can make comparisons difficult to interpret.

What happens if harvest output is zero?

A conversion ratio cannot be calculated with zero output because it would require division by zero. Enter a positive marketable harvest mass.

How is this different from yield per square foot?

Yield measures output relative to growing area. This conversion ratio measures output relative to the specifically tracked input mass, so the two indicators answer different questions.
