Vertical Farm Yield Forecast Estimator

This estimator forecasts annual marketable harvest for a vertical farm from active grow area, expected yield per square foot per cycle, cycle frequency, and a utilization factor. It provides a compact production-capacity estimate for crop planning, sales commitments, space comparisons, and scenario testing.

Vertical farms can have stacked growing levels, so enter the active planted area represented by the yield rate rather than the building footprint unless those are intentionally the same. The utilization factor can account for nonproductive bays, changeovers, sanitation, crop losses, or other practical gaps between theoretical and realized capacity.

What the result means

The result is the estimated marketable harvest over one year for the entered production assumptions.

The estimate does not independently model crop-specific growth time, germination losses, or grade-outs unless they are reflected in the yield or utilization inputs.

Should I enter floor area or active grow area?

Enter the area that the yield-per-square-foot figure actually describes. In stacked systems, that is often total active canopy or tray area rather than building footprint.

What does the utilization percentage represent?

It is a practical capacity factor for time or space that does not produce marketable output. It can reflect changeovers, sanitation, losses, empty positions, or other downtime if those effects are not already included in the yield rate.

Can I use a fractional number of cycles per year?

Yes. A decimal cycle count is useful when average crop duration does not divide evenly into a calendar year.

Why might actual harvest differ from the forecast?

Crop genetics, environmental conditions, survival, grade-outs, labor, equipment downtime, and scheduling can all change realized output. Use recent measured performance when possible.

Is this the same as revenue forecasting?

No. This calculator estimates physical harvest. Revenue also depends on sell-through, grade mix, price, packaging, and other commercial factors.
