Vineyard Yield Energy Cost Estimator

Estimate vineyard energy cost from electricity use, fuel use, and their unit prices. The calculator combines common operating energy inputs into one seasonal or job-level cost and also reports cost per acre, making it easier to compare blocks, irrigation periods, or operating scenarios on the same basis. Use it for budgeting activities such as pumping, cooling, shop operations, tractors, or other vineyard work when you know approximate kilowatt-hours and fuel gallons. The result is deliberately transparent: electricity and fuel are calculated separately before being added. Labor, equipment depreciation, maintenance, demand charges, taxes, and other non-energy costs are outside the calculation unless they are already embedded in the prices you enter.

What the result means

The main result combines the entered electricity and fuel expenses. Cost per acre normalizes that total by the vineyard area associated with the usage.

Utility demand charges, fixed fees, fuel delivery charges, and taxes are not separately modeled. Use effective unit prices if you want those costs reflected.

Given: 30 acres, 9,600 kWh at $0.17/kWh, and 500 gallons of fuel at $3.95/gallon.

Calculation: Electricity = 9,600 × 0.17 = $1,632. Fuel = 500 × 3.95 = $1,975. Total = $3,607. Cost per acre = 3,607 ÷ 30 = $120.23.

Result: Estimated energy cost = $3,607.00.

The estimate can be rerun with different energy prices or usage assumptions to test budget sensitivity.

Should I use billed electricity cost or the posted energy rate?

Use an effective per-kWh cost when possible if you want the estimate to resemble the full bill. A simple energy-only rate may omit demand charges, fixed fees, or taxes.

Can I leave fuel use at zero?

Yes. If a scenario uses only electricity, enter zero fuel gallons; the total will then reflect electricity cost only.

What period should the usage numbers cover?

Use the same period for electricity, fuel, and area context, such as one irrigation season or one production year. Mixing periods makes the total harder to interpret.

Does cost per acre measure energy efficiency?

It is a useful comparison metric, but it is not a complete efficiency measure. Different blocks may have different pumping lifts, terrain, equipment, or production needs.

Does this include labor and machinery ownership costs?

No. The calculator is limited to electricity and fuel energy expense. Add labor, repairs, depreciation, and other operating costs separately if you need a full production budget.
