Estimate vineyard harvest yield from bearing area, vine density, average clusters per vine, and average cluster weight. The calculator converts a simple crop-load estimate into total grape mass and yield per acre, giving growers a quick way to translate field sampling into a harvest forecast. It is useful during pre-harvest planning when you need an approximate tonnage for picking crews, bins, transport, winery intake, or sales commitments. Because cluster counts and weights can change as the season develops, the result is best treated as a scenario estimate that can be refreshed whenever new sampling data is available.

Area is in acres, cluster weight is in pounds, and the displayed harvest uses U.S. short tons. The model assumes the entered averages are representative of the bearing block.

What the result means

The main result is the estimated total grape tonnage for the entered vineyard area. Yield per acre helps compare the forecast with historical block performance or production targets.

This does not automatically account for missing vines, fruit thinning, disease loss, bird damage, weather losses, or differences among varieties unless those effects are reflected in your averages.

Given: 12 acres, 750 vines per acre, 24 clusters per vine, and 0.28 lb per cluster.

Calculation: 12 × 750 = 9,000 vines. 9,000 × 24 = 216,000 clusters. 216,000 × 0.28 = 60,480 lb. 60,480 ÷ 2,000 = 30.24 tons.

Result: Estimated harvest = 30.24 tons, or 2.52 tons per acre.

The forecast represents the crop load implied by the sample averages, not a guaranteed delivered tonnage.

Why does cluster weight matter so much?

Cluster weight directly multiplies the number of clusters, so a small change in the sampled average can materially change the tonnage estimate. Re-sampling near harvest usually improves the forecast.

Should I include nonbearing rows or missing vines?

No. Use bearing acreage and a vine-density figure that reflects productive vines, or reduce the density to account for missing vines.

Can I use kilograms instead of pounds?

This page is built around pounds and U.S. short tons. Convert kilogram measurements to pounds before entering cluster weight if you want the displayed tonnage to remain consistent.

How should I sample clusters per vine?

Sample vines across representative parts of the block rather than relying on one row or one vigor zone. The calculator only reflects the averages you enter.

Is this the same as a winery crush-weight estimate?

Not exactly. This is a field crop-load forecast; delivered crush weight can differ because of harvest losses, sorting, dehydration, and measurement timing.
