The calculator uses fixed weights of 40% for attendance, 30% for active participation, and 30% for assignment completion. It is a management indicator, not a measure of learning quality, mastery, or individual motivation.

What the result means

Calculation: (92 × 0.40) + (68 × 0.30) + (81 × 0.30) = 36.8 + 20.4 + 24.3 = 81.5.
Result: Engagement score = 81.5 out of 100.
The relatively lower participation rate is the clearest drag on the combined score.
Why is attendance weighted more heavily?
This model gives live attendance a 40% weight because showing up is a basic condition for participating in synchronous instruction. You can treat the score as a defined internal index rather than a universal standard.
What should count as active participation?
Use a consistent rule such as polls, chat contributions, microphone discussion, breakout activity, or another measurable interaction. Avoid changing the definition between cohorts you want to compare.
Can a high score prove strong learning outcomes?
No. Engagement behaviors and learning outcomes are related concepts but not identical. Pair this score with assessments or mastery measures when evaluating learning.
What if one component is unavailable?
The current model requires all three percentages. If a component cannot be measured reliably, avoid substituting an unrelated value because the fixed weights would make the score misleading.
How is this different from completion rate?
Completion is a single outcome about finishing a program. This score combines several behaviors that occur during participation and can change before completion is known.
