The result is a packing and planning estimate. Actual needs vary with sweat rate, humidity, sun exposure, altitude, clothing, and access to refill points, so long or remote walks deserve a conservative plan.

The calculator subtracts carried volume from the estimated session need.

Session water = Walking hours × condition rate × weight adjustment.

Weight adjustment = body weight ÷ 70, limited to 0.85–1.25.

Additional water = max(0, session water − water already carried).

What the result means

The result estimates fluid to make available during the walk.

This does not account for electrolyte needs or emergency reserve water.

Given: 70 kg, 90 minutes, mild conditions at 0.5 L/hour, and 0.5 L already carried.

Calculation: Need = 1.5 × 0.5 × 1.0 = 0.75 L. Additional = 0.75 − 0.5 = 0.25 L.

Result: Plan for 0.75 L total and add about 0.25 L.

Is this the same as daily water intake?

No. It estimates fluid for the walking session only.

Should I drink on every short walk?

Not necessarily. Duration, weather, personal sweat rate, and access to water all matter.

Why is weight adjustment capped?

The cap avoids producing extreme values from body weight alone because sweat rate is highly individual.

What about electrolytes?

Long, hot, or high-sweat walks may require sodium and other electrolytes, which this calculator does not estimate.

Should I carry extra water on remote routes?

Yes. Add a safety margin when refill access, weather, or route duration is uncertain.
