Weekly Sleep Calculator

The Weekly Sleep Calculator totals seven nightly sleep durations and reports the average, shortest night, longest night, and difference from a user-entered nightly target. It gives a clearer view of weekly consistency than relying on one unusually good or poor night.

Use it with a sleep diary, wearable, or estimated sleep times, but keep the measurement method consistent. Sleep duration is only one part of sleep health; timing, continuity, breathing, daytime symptoms, and individual needs also matter. This calculator summarizes recorded hours and is not a sleep-disorder screening or medical recommendation.

Difference from target total

1. Record each night
Enter the hours slept for each named night, using decimal hours when needed.

2. Set your own target
Add the nightly duration you want to use as a comparison point.

3. Review total sleep
The main result adds all seven nights.

4. Check consistency
The shortest-to-longest range shows how much nightly duration varied.

5. Read the target difference
A positive value is above the seven-night target total; a negative value is below it.

Weekly sleep = Sum of seven nightly durations
Average nightly sleep = Weekly sleep ÷ 7
Target difference = Weekly sleep − (Nightly target × 7)

The range is reported from the minimum entered night to the maximum entered night. Decimal hours are converted directly; for example, 7.5 hours equals 7 hours 30 minutes.

What the result means

The total and average describe recorded sleep duration for the week, while the target difference measures it against the user-selected comparison amount.

Wearable sleep estimates and time-in-bed estimates may not equal physiological sleep time.

Given: 7.2, 6.8, 7.5, 6.4, 7.0, 8.1, and 7.7 hours, with an 8-hour nightly target.

Calculation: Weekly total = 50.7 hours. Average = 50.7 ÷ 7 = 7.2429 hours. Target total = 8 × 7 = 56 hours. Difference = 50.7 − 56 = −5.3 hours.

Result: 50.7 hours total, about 7 hours 15 minutes per night, with a 6.4-to-8.1-hour range and 5.3 hours below the chosen target.

How do I enter minutes as decimal hours?

Divide minutes by 60. For example, 30 minutes is 0.5 hour and 45 minutes is 0.75 hour.

Should naps be included?

Include them if your goal is total sleep across each 24-hour period, and do so consistently for every day.

Can a weekly average hide irregular sleep?

Yes. Two people can have the same average but very different nightly ranges, which is why the calculator also displays the minimum and maximum.

Is the target a medical recommendation?

No. It is simply the comparison value you enter; individual sleep needs and clinical concerns require broader assessment.

Why might a wearable report differ from my estimate?

Wearables infer sleep from movement and other signals, while a diary may use time in bed. Neither method is perfectly precise.
