Basements vary widely in layout and construction. Interior partitions, soffits, columns, ceilings, stairwells, utility rooms, moisture-control assemblies, and code-required fire blocking can add material beyond the simple perimeter model used here. The drywall estimate assumes 4 × 8 sheets with 32 square feet of nominal coverage, and the stud estimate uses the spacing you enter along the perimeter. 1. Enter the finished floor area

Where:

  • 32 = nominal square feet covered by one 4 × 8 drywall sheet
  • Stud spacing = 16 or 24 inches on center, converted to feet

Assumptions: The drywall and stud calculations cover perimeter walls only. Doors and windows are not subtracted, providing some natural allowance for offcuts; interior partitions and ceilings must be estimated separately.

What the result means

The main result is the flooring coverage to order after the selected waste allowance. The breakdown gives baseline drywall-sheet and stud quantities for perimeter walls.

Wall area = 120 × 8 = 960 sq ft

Drywall = ceil(960 × 1.10 ÷ 32) = ceil(33) = 33 sheets

Studs = ceil(120 ÷ 1.3333...) + 1 = 91 studs

Result: Order about 864 sq ft of flooring, plus 33 drywall sheets and 91 perimeter studs under the stated assumptions.

Interpretation: These quantities form a perimeter-shell baseline; partitions, ceilings, openings, and specialty assemblies need their own takeoff.

Does the drywall estimate include the ceiling?

No. It estimates perimeter-wall drywall only. Add ceiling area separately if the basement ceiling will be drywalled.

Why are doors and windows not subtracted?

At this planning level, leaving openings in the wall area helps cover some cuts and offcuts. For a detailed takeoff, subtract large openings and then add a deliberate waste allowance.

Can I use 4 × 12 drywall sheets instead?

The built-in sheet count assumes 4 × 8 sheets at 32 square feet each. For another sheet size, divide the waste-adjusted wall area by that sheet's coverage and round up.

Does stud spacing alone determine framing quantity?

No. Corners, openings, backing, blocking, partition intersections, and headers add framing. The stud result is a straight-run perimeter baseline rather than a complete framing list.

How should I buy flooring sold by the box?

Use the calculated flooring-to-order result, divide it by the square feet covered per box, and round up to a whole box. Check whether the manufacturer recommends a specific overage for your layout.
