Cattle Feed Energy Cost Estimator

Estimate the electricity cost associated with preparing, processing, or distributing cattle feed over a chosen period. Enter the amount of feed handled, the electricity intensity per ton, and the electricity price to calculate total energy use, total cost, and cost per ton.

The estimator is designed for operational budgeting when grinders, mixers, conveyors, augers, or other electrically powered feed equipment can be represented by an average kilowatt-hour requirement per ton. It does not attempt to model a specific machine's motor efficiency or duty cycle. For a better estimate, use measured electricity consumption or a reliable equipment benchmark that reflects your actual process, throughput, and feed type.

Assumptions: The calculation assumes the entered energy intensity already reflects the equipment and operating conditions being modeled.

What the result means

The result is the estimated electricity-related cost of handling the entered amount of cattle feed, including any optional fixed cost.

Demand charges, fuel, labor, maintenance, and non-electric energy sources are excluded unless you deliberately include an attributable fixed amount.

Calculation
Electricity use = 150 × 7.8 = 1,170 kWh.

Interpretation
The modeled cattle-feed operation uses 1,170 kWh and costs about $222.20 for the entered tonnage.

What should I use for kWh per ton?

Use a measured value from your operation when available. Otherwise, use a benchmark that matches the equipment, feed material, and process closely enough for planning.

Can this include diesel or propane?

Not directly, because the variable calculation is based on electricity in kWh. You can add a known dollar amount as fixed energy cost, but a separate fuel-cost model is better when fuel use changes with tonnage.

Why is cost per ton zero when feed handled is zero?

Dividing total cost by zero tons is undefined. The calculator therefore displays zero for cost per ton when no feed tonnage is entered.

Does the electricity price include demand charges?

Only if your entered price per kWh already incorporates them. Many commercial bills have separate demand or fixed charges, which can be represented approximately in the optional fixed-cost field.

How can I compare two feed-processing setups?

Calculate each setup using the same feed tonnage and electricity price, then compare kWh use, total cost, and cost per ton. Capital, maintenance, throughput, and feed-quality effects should be compared separately.
