Cattle Feed Nutrient Rate Estimator

Estimate how much of a selected nutrient is supplied by a cattle-feed program each day. The calculator combines the number of cattle, feed offered per head, and the nutrient concentration of that feed to show both the total feed offered and the calculated nutrient mass supplied.

This is useful for checking a feed mix against a ration target, comparing formulations, or translating a percentage on a feed analysis into an operational amount. The result does not determine an animal's nutrient requirement; requirements vary with body weight, production stage, growth, pregnancy, milk production, environment, and the nutrient being evaluated. Use the same feed basis—such as as-fed or dry matter—for both feed intake and nutrient concentration.

1. Enter herd size
Use the number of cattle receiving this feed during the selected period.

2. Enter feed per head
Use kilograms of feed offered per animal per day on the basis you intend to analyze.

3. Add nutrient concentration
Enter the nutrient percentage from the feed formulation or analysis, using the same as-fed or dry-matter basis as the feed amount.

4. Choose the period
Enter the number of days for which you want the supplied nutrient total.

5. Review daily and period totals
The main result shows total nutrient mass for the period, while the breakdown shows feed and nutrient amounts per day.

Feed per day = Number of cattle × Feed per head per dayNutrient per day = Feed per day × (Nutrient concentration ÷ 100)Period nutrient = Nutrient per day × Days

Where:

  • Number of cattle = animals receiving the feed, in head
  • Feed per head per day = feed offered in kg/head/day
  • Nutrient concentration = selected nutrient as a percentage of the feed
  • Days = length of the planning period

Assumptions: This is a supply calculation, not a requirement model. Feed amount and nutrient percentage must be stated on a consistent basis.

What the result means

The result is the calculated mass of the selected nutrient supplied by the entered feed program across all cattle for the chosen period.

Use appropriate ration standards or qualified nutrition advice separately when deciding whether the supplied amount is adequate for a specific herd.

Given

  • 72 cattle
  • Feed offered: 22 kg/head/day
  • Nutrient concentration: 13.5%
  • Period: 7 days

Calculation
Feed per day = 72 × 22 = 1,584 kg/day.
Nutrient per day = 1,584 × 0.135 = 213.84 kg/day.
Period nutrient = 213.84 × 7 = 1,496.88 kg.

Result
1,496.88 kg

Interpretation
The entered ration supplies 1,496.88 kg of the selected nutrient to the herd over seven days.

Does the nutrient percentage represent crude protein only?

No. It can represent any nutrient expressed as a percentage of the same feed basis, such as crude protein or another analyzed component. Interpret the result according to the nutrient you entered.

Can I use pounds instead of kilograms?

The page is configured for kilograms. If your source values are in pounds, convert both feed and resulting nutrient quantities consistently before using the displayed kilogram result.

Is feed offered the same as feed consumed?

Not always. Refusals, sorting, and wastage can make actual intake lower than feed offered. If you need an intake estimate, use a feed amount that reflects expected consumption rather than delivered feed.

Why does the calculator not ask for cattle body weight?

Body weight is important for estimating nutrient requirements, but this tool calculates nutrient supply from a feed program. It does not estimate the herd’s biological requirement.

How do I compare two feed formulations?

Run the calculator with the same cattle count and feed amount but change the nutrient percentage for each formulation. Compare the nutrient supplied, while also considering cost, intake, digestibility, and other ration constraints separately.
