Cattle Feed Yield Forecast Estimator

Forecast the usable amount of cattle feed expected from a planned harvest or feed-production run after accounting for recovery and storage losses. The estimator is useful when a producer knows the planted or contracted area and an expected field yield but needs a more practical figure for the feed that should remain available for the herd.

Instead of treating gross harvested tonnage as fully usable, the calculation applies a harvest recovery percentage and then a storage-loss percentage. The resulting usable-feed forecast can support feed budgeting, purchase timing, storage planning, and comparisons between yield scenarios. Because actual forage dry matter, weather, harvest technique, and spoilage can change realized availability, the result is a planning estimate rather than a guaranteed feed inventory.

Assumptions: All percentages are applied sequentially. The estimator does not convert between as-fed and dry-matter tons, so all yield inputs should use the same basis.

What the result means

The main result is the estimated tons of cattle feed remaining for use after the selected harvest recovery and storage-loss assumptions.

Actual availability can differ because of moisture, weather, harvest timing, storage conditions, and feed-quality changes.

Gross feed = 120 × 4.8 = 576 tons.

Under these assumptions, about 471.40 tons of feed should remain usable after harvest and storage losses.

Should yield be entered on an as-fed or dry-matter basis?

Either basis can be used, but the expected yield and the final interpretation must stay on the same basis. Do not enter dry-matter yield and then interpret the result as as-fed tons.

Why are harvest recovery and storage loss separate?

Harvest recovery represents feed that never reaches storage, while storage loss occurs after recovered feed is placed into storage. Applying them separately prevents the losses from being treated as one undifferentiated percentage.

Can I use this for silage, hay, or other cattle feeds?

Yes, when the inputs describe a crop or feed supply in consistent tons and the recovery and storage assumptions are appropriate for that material. The calculator does not adjust for nutrient density or moisture changes.

What happens if storage loss is 100%?

The forecast usable feed becomes zero because all recovered feed is assumed lost. A 0% storage loss leaves recovered feed unchanged.

How can I use the forecast in a feed budget?

Compare the usable-feed result with projected cattle consumption over the same planning period. That comparison can help identify a potential surplus or purchase requirement, but ration quality and dry-matter requirements should be evaluated separately.
