Step-based calorie values are approximate because cadence, terrain, gait, body composition, and device counting methods differ. The calculator exposes the calorie factor so users can apply a conservative assumption instead of presenting one value as universally accurate.

1. Enter the step count

Assumptions: The calorie factor is an adjustable simplification. It does not capture grade, speed, or individual movement economy.

What the result means

The main result converts the entered steps and average step length into distance.

Energy expenditure is a rough estimate and should not be treated as measured calorie burn.

Given:

  • Steps: 10,000
  • Step length: 0.75 m
  • Body weight: 70 kg
  • Calorie factor: 0.50 kcal/kg-km

Calculation:

Distance = 10,000 × 0.75 ÷ 1,000 = 7.5 km. Calories = 70 × 7.5 × 0.50 = 262.5 kcal.

Result: 7.50 km and about 263 kcal.

The distance depends directly on the step-length estimate; the calorie figure is less precise.

How do I measure step length?

Walk a known distance at a normal pace, count steps, then divide meters by steps.

Are phone and watch step counts identical?

No. Placement and detection algorithms can produce different counts.

Do all 10,000 steps burn the same calories?

No. Body mass, pace, incline, and gait change energy expenditure.

Can I use running steps?

Yes for distance if step length is measured while running, but the default calorie factor may not fit.

Is this the same as a pedometer distance?

It uses the same basic idea, but a device may dynamically estimate stride length instead of using one fixed value.
