Etsy Return Calculator

The Etsy Return Calculator measures the percentage of fulfilled orders or units that were returned and estimates the net cost of those returns. It separates recoverable merchandise value from reverse-shipping, processing, and nonrecoverable product cost.

Sellers can use the result to spot changes in product fit, listing accuracy, packaging quality, or buyer expectations. Return rate and return cost answer different questions, so the calculator reports both rather than treating every returned item as a total loss.

  1. Match the period. Use fulfilled and returned orders from a consistent cohort or reporting window.
  2. Enter returned orders. Count orders with a physical return, not refund-only cases unless merchandise was sent back.
  3. Add product cost. Use the seller’s cost per returned order, not the retail selling price.
  4. Estimate recoverable value. Enter the share of product cost expected to be recovered through restocking, repair, or resale.
  5. Add reverse-logistics costs. Include return shipping and processing labor or supplies.
  6. Review rate and cost together. A low return rate can still be expensive when each return has a high loss.

The estimate assumes one average product-cost and logistics-cost amount per returned order.

What the result means

The main result estimates the seller cost that remains after recoverable merchandise value is credited.

Customer refunds, original outbound shipping, and marketplace fee adjustments are not included unless added to the cost inputs.

Given: 240 fulfilled orders, 9 returns, $18 product cost per return, 70% recoverable value, $5.50 return shipping, and $3 processing cost.

Calculation: Return rate = 9 ÷ 240 × 100 = 3.75%. Gross returned cost = 9 × 18 = $162. Recovered value = 162 × 70% = $113.40. Net return cost = 162 − 113.40 + 9 × (5.50 + 3.00) = $125.10.

Result: The return rate is 3.75%, with an estimated net return cost of $125.10.

What is the difference between a return and a refund?

A return involves merchandise being sent back. A refund is a payment reversal and can occur with or without a physical return.

Should exchanges count as returns?

Count them when the original item comes back and creates reverse-logistics cost. Track exchanges separately as well if replacement fulfillment is material.

How do I choose a recovery rate?

Use historical resale, repair, or salvage results. A pristine restock may recover close to full product cost, while customized or damaged goods may recover little.

Should canceled orders be included?

Generally no if they were canceled before fulfillment. The denominator should represent orders that had a realistic opportunity to be returned.

Does a higher return rate always mean a product problem?

Not necessarily. Gift seasons, sizing-sensitive products, and policy changes can affect returns, but persistent listing-level increases deserve investigation.
