Estimate utilization of physical rooms or shared workspaces used by a home care operation, such as intake rooms, tele-visit rooms, training rooms, or coordination spaces. Because most home care service is delivered in patients’ homes, this calculator is intended for agencies that still manage a defined pool of bookable on-site rooms or stations.The calculation compares booked room-hours with total available room-hours. If your organization has no meaningful room-based capacity constraint, a field-capacity or staffing calculator will usually be more informative than this measure.

1. Choose the space pool
Count only rooms or stations that are genuinely interchangeable for the activity being measured.

2. Enter availability
Set how many hours each space can be booked per day and how many days it is available.

3. Add booked room-hours
Use the total hours reserved or occupied across all selected spaces during the week.

4. Set a session length
Enter a representative booked-session duration to express remaining room time as session equivalents.

5. Interpret carefully
A high percentage matters only if these rooms actually constrain intake, tele-visits, training, or another agency workflow.

What the result means

The result is the share of stated shared-space capacity that is booked. It applies to agency rooms or stations, not to the homes where care is delivered.

If room availability is not a meaningful operational bottleneck, use field visit capacity, staffing, or wait-time measures instead.

Why would a home care agency track room utilization?

Some agencies use rooms for intake, telehealth, training, assessments, equipment setup, or coordination. This tool is only useful when those spaces are actually bookable resources.

Should patient homes be counted as rooms?

No. Patient homes are not an agency-controlled room inventory, so they should not be included in this utilization denominator.

Can I use workstations instead of rooms?

Yes, if the stations are the scarce bookable resource. Use the same capacity logic and label the result internally as station utilization.

What does utilization above 100% mean?

Booked hours exceed the capacity implied by your room count and availability. That may reflect overtime use, overlapping bookings, shared-space definitions, or an input mismatch.

How is this different from home care patient capacity?

Room utilization measures an on-site space resource. Patient capacity models field staff time, service duration, and travel, which are usually more central to home care delivery.
