Estimate the average time a home care request may wait before a field slot becomes available using a simple backlog-throughput model. The calculator combines the number of requests already waiting with new daily demand and the number of visits the team can start or complete per day, then converts that queue into days of capacity.This is a planning estimate rather than a promise of an appointment date. Home care requests are not always served strictly first-in, first-out: urgency, geography, staff credentials, patient availability, authorization, and requested visit windows can change individual waits.

What the result means

The main result expresses the current backlog as an equivalent number of service-capacity days. It is most useful for comparing scenarios under a consistent queue definition.

The model assumes roughly steady average demand and throughput and does not prioritize cases by urgency, geography, staff skill, or requested time window.

Queue wait = 45 ÷ 30 = 1.50 operating days. Daily backlog change = 24 − 30 = −6 requests/day. Clear time = 45 ÷ 6 = 7.5 operating days.

Result

Estimated queue wait: 1.50 operating days; current backlog would shrink by about 6 requests per operating day.

Capacity exceeds average incoming demand in this scenario, so the current backlog can decline if those rates persist.

Is this the same as the wait for a specific patient?

No. It converts aggregate backlog into capacity days. An individual request may wait more or less depending on priority, location, availability, authorization, and required staff skills.

What if new requests are higher than daily capacity?

The daily backlog change becomes positive, indicating the queue is growing. The calculator will also show that the current backlog is not clearing at those average rates.

Should capacity mean completed visits or new admissions?

Use the throughput unit that matches your queue. If the backlog is for first visits, use first-visit capacity; if it is for all visits awaiting scheduling, use the corresponding visit capacity.

Why are waits shown in operating days?

Capacity is entered per operating day, so the queue is naturally expressed in those units. Calendar-day wait depends on which days the service operates and how requests are scheduled.

How can I test a staffing change?

Increase daily service capacity to the level expected after the staffing change and compare the queue wait and daily backlog change with the current scenario.
