Horse Feed Daily Requirements Estimator

The Horse Feed Daily Requirements Estimator converts a horse's body weight and a user-selected daily feed rate into a daily dry-matter target, then optionally splits that target between forage and concentrate. It is designed for planning quantities once you already have an appropriate feeding rate or ration target from a qualified nutrition source, veterinarian, feed label, or management plan.

The calculator can help translate percentage-based feeding instructions into kilograms or pounds per day and estimate how much of each ration component is needed. It does not determine an individual horse's nutritional requirement, calorie need, or medically appropriate ration. Actual feeding decisions can vary with forage quality, life stage, workload, body condition, metabolic status, climate, and veterinary considerations, so the entered rate and ration split should come from an appropriate source for the horse being managed.

Daily dry matter (kg) = Body weight (kg) × Daily rate (%) ÷ 100

Forage dry matter = Daily dry matter × Forage share (%) ÷ 100

Concentrate dry matter = Daily dry matter − Forage dry matter

The model applies the feeding rate and forage split you enter. It does not infer nutrient requirements or convert dry matter to as-fed weight because feed moisture differs by product and forage.

What the result means

The main result is the daily dry-matter quantity produced by the body-weight percentage you entered.

For an as-fed ration or individualized nutrition plan, account for actual feed moisture and obtain appropriate equine nutrition or veterinary guidance.

Given:
500 kg horse; 2.0% body-weight dry-matter rate; 80% forage share; 7-day planning period.

Calculation:
Daily dry matter = 500 × 0.02 = 10 kg. Forage = 10 × 0.80 = 8 kg/day. Concentrate = 10 − 8 = 2 kg/day. Seven-day total = 10 × 7 = 70 kg DM.

Result:
10.00 kg dry matter per day: 8.00 kg forage DM and 2.00 kg concentrate DM.

Interpretation:
At the entered plan, the horse would require 70 kg of total dry matter over seven days. This is a quantity translation, not a ration recommendation.

Does the calculator decide how much a horse should eat?

No. You provide the body-weight percentage from an appropriate feeding plan or professional recommendation, and the calculator converts that rate into quantities.

Why are the results shown on a dry-matter basis?

Dry matter removes water from the comparison, which makes feeds with different moisture levels easier to compare. To determine as-fed weight, you also need each feed’s dry-matter percentage.

Can I enter a forage-only ration?

Yes. Set forage share to 100%, and the concentrate result becomes zero. Whether that ration is appropriate depends on the individual feeding plan.

What if my horse is weighed in pounds?

Convert the weight to kilograms before entering it, or divide pounds by about 2.20462. The result also shows the daily total converted back to pounds.

Why might actual feeding amounts differ from this estimate?

Individual needs can change with forage analysis, body condition, workload, growth, pregnancy, health status, weather, and other factors. Those considerations are outside this arithmetic model.
