Horse Feed Capacity Estimator

The Horse Feed Capacity Estimator converts a storage container's internal dimensions into geometric volume and then estimates how many kilograms of feed it can hold using a bulk-density value you supply. It also applies a fill-level percentage so the result can reflect headspace rather than assuming the bin is packed completely full.

This is useful for feed-room planning, selecting bins, comparing storage options, or estimating how much product remains when a container is only partly filled. Bulk density varies widely among pellets, textured feeds, grains, cubes, and chopped forage, so the density field should come from product information or an actual measured sample when precision matters. The calculator assumes a rectangular container and does not account for rounded corners, sloped walls, bridging, settling, or unusable space around lids and scoops.

1. Measure internal container dimensions
Enter the usable inside length, width, and height in centimeters rather than outside dimensions.

2. Enter feed bulk density
Use kilograms per liter from product data or a measured sample. Do not assume two feeds with the same bag weight occupy the same volume.

3. Set the fill level
Enter the percentage of geometric volume you expect to fill. Leaving headspace can make scooping, lid clearance, and mixing easier.

4. Read estimated mass
The main result converts filled liters into kilograms using the entered bulk density.

5. Use the conversions for storage planning
The breakdown also shows gross liters, filled liters, pounds, and unused headspace so you can compare bins on more than one basis.

Container volume (L) = Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 1,000

Filled volume = Container volume × Fill level (%) ÷ 100

Estimated feed mass (kg) = Filled volume (L) × Bulk density (kg/L)

The model assumes a rectangular container and uniform bulk density. Real capacity can differ because feed settles, bridges, contains fines, or occupies irregular space.

What the result means

The main result is the estimated mass of feed that fits at the entered fill level and bulk density.

For purchasing or safety-critical storage limits, verify container specifications and measure the actual feed density rather than relying on a generic value.

Given:
80 cm × 50 cm × 60 cm internal bin; density 0.55 kg/L; 90% fill.

Calculation:
Volume = 80 × 50 × 60 ÷ 1,000 = 240 L. Filled volume = 240 × 0.90 = 216 L. Feed mass = 216 × 0.55 = 118.8 kg.

Result:
118.80 kg estimated feed capacity, about 261.91 lb.

Interpretation:
A 90% fill leaves about 24 liters of geometric headspace in this rectangular-bin model.

Where can I get bulk density for my feed?

Use manufacturer information if available, or weigh a known volume of the actual feed. Bulk density can change with particle size, formulation, and settling.

Can I use bag volume instead of measuring a bin?

Yes, if you know the usable volume in liters you can reverse-engineer equivalent dimensions, but this page is designed around rectangular internal dimensions.

Why should I leave less than 100% fill?

Practical storage often needs headspace for lids, scoops, mixing, or settling. The fill-level field lets you model that choice without changing the physical bin dimensions.

Does the result show how long the feed will last?

No. This calculator estimates storage mass. Use a daily feed quantity with a separate days-supply calculation to determine duration.

Will pelleted feed and chopped forage have the same capacity?

Not necessarily. Their bulk densities can be very different, so the same container volume can hold different masses.
