Powerlifting Total Training Load Calculator

The Powerlifting Total Training Load Calculator adds the external tonnage performed in squat, bench press, and deadlift work. For each lift, it multiplies working sets by reps per set and average load, then combines the three subtotals into one session training-load figure.

This is a straightforward volume-load calculation for logging and comparing sessions. It can help coaches and lifters see which lift contributed most to the day’s tonnage or whether total workload changed from one week to the next. Tonnage does not capture exercise difficulty, range of motion, proximity to failure, tempo, or individual fatigue, so it should be paired with intensity and effort information when making programming decisions.

Lift tonnage = Sets × Reps per set × Average load Total session tonnage = Squat tonnage + Bench tonnage + Deadlift tonnage

Where:
Sets = number of included working sets
Reps per set = average or representative repetitions in each set
Average load = average external load in kilograms

Assumptions: If sets use different reps or loads, the most accurate method is to calculate each block separately and sum the blocks. This page uses one representative reps-and-load value per lift.

What the result means

The main result is the total kilograms of external load moved across the entered squat, bench press, and deadlift work.

A larger tonnage is not automatically a harder session; intensity, effort, and exercise execution also matter.

Given:
Squat: 5 × 5 at 140 kg
Bench press: 5 × 5 at 90 kg
Deadlift: 3 × 5 at 170 kg

Calculation:
Squat tonnage = 5 × 5 × 140 = 3,500 kg
Bench tonnage = 5 × 5 × 90 = 2,250 kg
Deadlift tonnage = 3 × 5 × 170 = 2,550 kg
Total = 3,500 + 2,250 + 2,550 = 8,300 kg

Result:
8,300 kg

Interpretation: The session contains 8.3 metric tons of logged external training volume across the three competition lifts.

Should warm-up sets count?

That depends on your logging system. Many lifters track working-set tonnage only, but including warm-ups is acceptable if you do it consistently.

What if every set uses a different load?

Calculate separate blocks or use a weighted average load. A simple arithmetic average can be misleading if the rep counts differ greatly between loads.

Does tonnage measure intensity?

No. Tonnage measures external volume-load, while intensity is commonly described relative to maximum strength or by effort measures such as RPE.

Can I enter only one or two lifts?

Yes. Leave the unused lift fields at zero and the total will reflect only the work you entered.

Why might a lower-tonnage session feel harder?

Heavy low-rep work can generate less tonnage than moderate-load volume while still being highly demanding. Technique, proximity to failure, and recovery state also affect perceived difficulty.
